Burrinja is a multi-arts space located in Upwey in the Dandenong Ranges fifty minutes from Melbourne. It offers a changing program of local and contemporary art, as well as significant touring exhibitions. In its Burrinja Gallery selected items of the McLeod Gift Collection are on display which includes Aboriginal objects, drawings and paintings as well as ceremonial objects from New Ireland and New Britain in Papua New Guinea. Aboriginal artworks originate in Indigenous tribal areas around Australia and include works by Lin Onus, Rover Thomas, Emily Kame Kngwarrey, Eva Ngamjamirra, Queenie Mackenzie, Jack Dale and Jonathan Kumintjara-Brown amongst others. Burrinja offers the following gallery tours to schools and social groups. All tours can host a maximum of 30 people per tour, and are hosted by trained Burrinja staff. Please contact the gallery to arrange the type of program that will best suit your needs. Indigenous Art and Culture Learning Tour A comprehensive tour of the gallery’s Indigenous art collection, including in-depth discussion of the stories and culture behind the paintings, the artists and their lands. Also discusses different art techniques, materials and styles used. This tour can be tailored to various levels: Primary School, Secondary School or Adults. Feature Exhibition Learning Tour A comprehensive tour and discussion of Burrinja’s Feature Exhibition, including information on the artist/s and exhibition history/background. Our Feature Exhibition changes every 2 months. This tour is best suited to Secondary School students or Adults. General Burrinja Tour Enjoy a guided look around the entire Burrinja building, including galleries, theatre, backstage, art studios, café and Art of Place Indigenous Garden. In 2011 the building underwent expansion and refurbishment, so we can talk you through the changes and the great history behind Burrinja. This tour is best suited to Adults. Burrinja also offers a 400-seat theatre performance space and Black Box theatre for plays, musicals and film screenings; workshop space and café.
